Biography
My name is Delaney, a Junior in college, and 21 years old. I'm aiming for a BFA with a focus on Digital Media in order to pursue my passion for the arts and animation. I was born and raised in Colorado. I have experience with Photoshop and other Adobe related products as well as other digital art programs (Procreate, Paint tool Sai, etc), and and some practice with 2D Animation. I try to make art, whether digital or traditional, as often as I can. I am also deeply interested in nature, conservation, and the natural world, and that influences a lot of my work.
Ever since I was old enough to hold a crayon I knew I was meant to create. Throughout my childhood and teens I worked hard to improve my skills to get to where I am today. Even today I actively seek improvement outside of class, practicing composition, lighting, character design, and other important elements of design that will assist me in my future career. I always try my best to create something I'm proud of, and demonstrate my skills in a meaningful way in every piece I create. I'm always trying a technique or a style that is outside my comfort zone, pushing my work to be more dynamic and adding variety to the things I am capable of. Creating a story or a character that resonates with others, or helps others in some way is one of my main driving forces. Exploring the full range of emotions, issues in society, and other day-to-day occurrences and hardships through storytelling is something that has always fascinated me. As I continue to work my way through navigating college and the art world, I continue to work towards furthering my understanding of art, and pushing my limits in order to improve and expand my skills. Character Design and Storyboarding is my end goal career, and Digital Media is the path I'm choosing to take to get there.
Statement
Luminescence is a frame-by-frame digitally drawn animated gif. This work was inspired by the reflection of the night sky on a still body of water at night and the feeling it elicits, which is demonstrated by both the color palette and the elements of the animation itself. There are 18 unique frames in total.
The process of creating this project started by choosing a piece of paper out of a container and using that to build a landscape to illustrate. Once I chose one, we were tasked to imagine ourselves in that specific area. The portion of map I chose was over Skagway, Alaska near Glacier Bay National Park.
First, I looked up an overview map of the area on the piece of paper, and found pictures of the area around it as references. Then, I chose a spot on the map near a bay, and imagined what it would be like to stand just in front of them water. It's a mountainous area, so I chose to put mountains across the water. I also added an old fence to draw the viewer's eye down the piece and towards the center of the drawing. I used a textured brush for a grainy, rough aesthetic, and then chose to add elements to make it resemble a post card.
Second, I started to create the birds eye view map of the area. I used a reference photo to build the general shape of the map, and then went in and added details to make it match the aesthetic of the previous piece. I tried to use my imagination over the reference photo as much as possible. Once I finished the details in color, I distressed both this Birds eye image as well as the other with detail brushes, and added paper textures.
Visually, both of these pieces have a rough texture, and a warm tint to the colors used. It is visually similar to a postcard, or a 2D video game map. I think they work well together, and accurately represent what this project's end goal was%E2%80%94UUsing your imagination to create visuals based on a real area on a map.
